That's the lifespan of Nicolaus Copernicus.

This article covers the significance of his lifetime achievements in Astronomy.

The "alternate theory" suggested by cattbarf (item 10) is known as the Heliocentric Theory - that is, that the Earth and all the other planets revolve around the sun.

All of the other events in his lifetime, although not all attributed to him, could be said to have occurred during the "Copernican Revolution".

This constituted a fundamental change in thinking about the nature of the universe.

Previously it was thought that the Earth was the center of the universe. Suddenly, it was not. That concept sent a lot of Biblical dogmas running for cover.
