I heard that tomato sauce can brighten up brass but I'm not too sure - any easy ways to clean it with the exception of soap and water?

Brasso, any acidic fruit juice or even tomato ketchup. But if your brass lamp has been lacquered, it will always have a darker appearence than normal. This can be removed with Brasso and tons of elbow grease.

I use Nevr-Dull wadding polish (made by Eagle One) for all my metal cleaning. It does not leave a white dried haze like Brasso. And does not take all the elbow grease to get the job done either. It is easy to use it looks like a big wad of cotton in the can. All you do is pinch off a small piece of the cotton an start wiping the brass. Then wipe clean with a soft cloth. Can be found at any Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Store.Maybe even at Wal-mart in the car cleaning products section. Take a look at this site.

You can take salt, put in some vinegar so it becomes a paste and polish it with this. I have used it on brass on boats and it works wonders. Rinse with water after and use Brasso or similar product for the finish.

Use lemon juice, or vinegar on a soft cloth. Rinse with a clean damp cloth after using the above solutions. They are an acid and you don't want to leave the residue on the brass permanently. These two solutions both work awesome.
