The baby oil helped and fur started growing back around the affected area. After that his eyes pussed up and crusted up and it looked like a severe case of pink eye. We put terramycin ointment in both eyes. That didn't seem to help because both eyes started to drain, the puss was very thick and yellow. We had to keep an eye on him because the drainage would dry so bad that his eyelids were stuck closed. Obviously the drainage has caused fur loss around his eyes and face. The bare skin is now real dry and scaly looking. It almost looks like the drainage has started eaing away at his skin although there isn't any open wound areas. Does anyone have any idea what this is or how to treat it? This looks extremely painful and we've even thought about having him put to sleep. Just like all pet lovers, we really don't want to do that unless we have to. Please help!!

So, you'd rather put him to sleep than take him to a vet?
That makes no sense.

It's better to go to a vet who can tell you exactly what's going on than to guess and use home remedies that have clearly made the problem worse.

First, I'm beginning to wonder whether your rabbit really had mites around the eyes. What made you draw that conclusion? For mites, the best treatment is a shot of Ivomectin. Secondly, the baby oil could have irritated your rabbit's eyes and caused the eye infection to occur. Third you haven't mentioned how old your rabbit is. That can sometimes be a large help when trying to figure out what the problem is. Some rabbits when they are small babies get that mucasy type drainage over their eyes and it can be treated by opening their eyes up and dropping a drop or two of regular Visine in their eyes. Get the regular kind with a 2% boric acid solution as the active ingredient.

However, the eye infection your rabbit has could be some different kind of infection and that may not work at all.

I'd recommend taking your rabbit to the veterinarian. It will probably need some antibiotic shots and some eyedrops. Your rabbit doesn't need put to sleep, but you do need to get the problem treated soon by a vet or the rabbit may stand a good chance of going blind in the infected eyes.

Has the vet been recommending you to use all those products?? You should never use baby oil on a rabbit especially around the eyes. The eye infection may be a direct result of using the baby oil near the eyes, but only a vet will know for sure. Your rabbit needs desperately to see a vet or the damage from the infection could go to his lungs and cause pneumonia. He may still have the mites also if you didn't have a skin scraping to confirm the type of mites. The mites he has caused him to get mange and unless this is treated with the proper medications, it won't go away. It will keep breaking out until all the mites are killed. I've experienced mange with several small animals that all needed the vet for treatment. This is not a do it yourself type problem. Mange is also passed from one animal to another by direct contact or human when hands aren't washed or sanitized right after handling the affected animal. We use non latex gloves to treat the affected animals, but still cleanse our hands as well for precaution.

Clean the eyes with a clean cotton for each eye, dampened with warm water several times a day in addition to what the vet will tell you. This will help keep the eye from crusting up and remove any pus.

Baby oil will not kill ear mites. You really need to go to the vet and find out for sure if it really IS ear mites. there are many kinds of infections that can cause an animal to have itching in the ear. If it is mites the vet will clean the ears and give you an ear wash with an insecticide in it.

Er - was all this recommended by a vet? If not - not advisable, you shouldn't be self-diagnosing/medicating, especially not where eyes and eye drops are concerned.

If you haven't been to the vet, do so at once, certainly before you start worrying about having to have the rabbit euthanised!!

If you have been to the vet, continue to follow their advice, as no one on here can give you better answers than they.

I think that you should take the poor rabbit to the Vet to see what's wrong with it.
