Okay, here's the straight scoop in this rattlesnake issue. The City and County of Denver is surrounded by suburbs and likelihood of finding a rattlesnake in Denver proper is beyond comprehension. The comment above about them only being in SW Colorado is preposterous. If you're talking about the Denver metropolitan area, it's a little bit different. Just like with any other wildlife, rattlesnakes have, for the most part, been displaced by development. There are exceptions, however. On the fringes, where development meets the foothills or grasslands, there are going to be snakes. There was a fire on South Table Mountain near Golden a few years ago. One of the things firefighters talked about were the number of rattlesnakes. Former governor Roy Romer taking a hike with some local politicos and a news crew happened across a rattlesnake in Roxborough Park a few years back. Recently, a LARGE rattlesnake was captured in Broomfield and relocated. I know of people who live in the foothills - where, by the way, there are many homes - who know where to find snakes on any warm, sunny day. A little girl was bitten while she played in her parents yard in that area. Rattlesnakes shouldn't be a problem unless you're moving to the outer most suburbs and even then, with some common sense, you should be okay.

Rattlesnakes *everywhere* in Denver?? LOL No, no, we're not infested at all. Rattlesnakes need the rocky areas on the plains or in the foothills to nest and survive and find prey. The city of Denver has none of that! Rattlesnakes avoid humans and do everything to slither away - they're only dangerous if they're surprised or cornered. Also, snakes don't live in the mountains - it's too cold. So relax - the only snakes you'll find are patrolling the bars.

You shouldn't have any problems with snakes living in Denver. Granted there are some in the foothills and the prairies but I've never heard of them right downtown. If you move to some of the outlying suburbs you could possibly see them. My sister lives in Aurora, a city in the Denver area, and will occassionally see a rattler by the state park but its a big open area. In Colorado, you should always keep your eyes open when you are in a wildlife or open area. In the city, not so much.

whoever told you that is seriously misinformed. there are absolutely no rattle snakes in the denver area. If you go WAY off road and know where to look you might be able to find them. Actually Denver is more snake, bug, and other creepy crawlers-free than most other places. Which is good for me because I hate all of those things. You'll do just fine in Denver.

I have lived in Denver my whole life and I have never seen a rattle snake. In fact, I always thought there weren't any until a short time ago! I am terrified of snakes and luckily there really aren't many in Denver, especially if you live in an urbanized area. Don't worry, they are more afraid of you than you are of them.

Not unless you live in the foothills. I've lived here for 38 years and I've never seen a rattle snake here. One reason is it stays cold in the mountains at night even in the summer, so the snakes tend to sun themselves on rocks and then go into their lairs at night.

LOL! I'm sorry to laugh, but your question just tickled me!
Denver is a big metropolian area. It is very developed and most critters of any kind have headed out of such busy, people infested areas.
If you're living out in areas that are still developing, you may run across a snake or two, but it's doubtful.
There are rattlesnakes in my neck of the woods, but I'm in Pueblo, which is southern Colorado. In fact, many, many moons ago, when I was in elementary school, our school was very much on the prairie and we did have somewhat of a rattlesnake problem. The principal, who was one tough older chick, always killed them herself.
(BTW, all you do is take a shovel to their head and chop it off.)
You have nothing to worry about in Denver though. You'll see many more deer and rabbits before you'll see rattlesnakes in your yard.
