An excellent question. If I remember my physics correctly - the length of a piece of string is the distance from here to there minus the circumfrence of an elephant at its widest part times the width of a standard paperclip plus the time it takes Ed and Bob to mow the lawn - squared. But then again I could be wrong - it could be the width of a big paperclip. Pax - C.

a rather tricky equation can give you the answer in seconds:
3y squared - z to the power of y
where y stands for the temperature in degrees celsius and z is the age of the person measuring the string.
