The Fire & Rescue Dept. in my community is known as one of, if not THE, best in the US. Our standards are so high and training is so thorough that I have confidence in anyone in the department.
Here, there is only ONE standard. Gender or age are irrelevant. They NEVER lower their standards, even if you are 63 year old male or female firefighter. If you can't meet THE standard, you are suspended, retired, or chained to a desk.
If some municipalities have different standards for women or older people to increase their numbers, that is simply dangerous. Remind me not to move there.
I attended a Fire & Rescue Academy graduation yesterday. There were 34 graduates, including 7 women and 2 people in their 50s. So, those 7 women qualify as do the older gentlemen.
The women (I was told by one of the recruits) did have a tougher time with some of the physical tasks, but still they passed with good grades.
Secondly, all firefighters here are taught to work in teams, so your scenario is unlikely, but not impossible.
I would really prefer the smartest, most knowledgeable firefighter (whoever that is). The one that understands how to "read" the fire and make the right decision so that we actually do get out safely.
But, if all else is equal I would have to select option 1.
EDIT: It is better and safer for firefighters to be trim, agile, and strong, with fast twitch muscles, rather than heavy and bulky.

Isn't it silly that all these feminists want to point out that there might just be some woman out there who is a firefighter and who is as competent as a man. And shouldn't all women get to be firefighters just because somewhere there is some woman who can do as good a job as a man? But what about all those people who might suffer and die because a female firefighter who is as good as a male firefighter is as rare as hen's teeth?
The female firefighter who answered the question above even admitted her male counterparts are working harder to make up for her shortcomings. She said they go into the building because they know they can do a better job. But if she wasn't there, maybe there would be another MALE there who could actually do the job well and all her co-workers wouldn't have to work doubly hard to make up for her female shortcomings. Maybe even ALL the firefighters could go into the building and get the people out before someone perishes. Women need to get off their high-horse and admit there are some jobs they can't do as well as men. People are suffering because of their delusions.
Oh...and in answer to your question, I'd choose #1.

If I'm trapped in a burning structure, then I don't get a choice do I? I have succumbed to the smoke and have passed out. I won't know who comes to rescue me, so therfore it won't matter who comes to get me!
Anyway, your choices aren't really choices at all. Males & females are given the exact same written and physical tests here in FL. There is no seperate standard. As a mater of fact, my wife is a fire fighter, as am I, and she passed all the same tests that I have!
I'm also an instructor and one of the classes I am especially fond of is the RIT class. RIT stands for Rapid Intervention Team. And one of the things I teach in RIT is it's not how much you weigh or how much stregnth you have, when it comes to getting someone out of a burning structure, it's all in technique. The techniques I teach will enable anyone, no matter what their size, weight or phisical abilities to get anyone out of a structure.
Option one is a farce anyway. Any firefighter worth his salt isn't going to throw you over his shoulder and walk out because he know that heat rises and by walking out with you over his shoulder puts you and him at risk to the heat near the ceiling. So you would emerge with burns on your body.
The female firefighter is actually smarter because she kept you low to the ground by dragging you where the air is cooler, therefore reducing the risk of burns to your body. Plus, no firefighter does a foot drag down a flight of stairs and every firefighter goes in with a partner so there would be two of you there any way. And how would I, the victim, know if she was a feminist or not?
My answer is based on FACTS! Facts that every firefighter is taught regardless of the state they're in or the FD they work for! As a victim being rescued...YOU DON"T GET A CHOICE!

This is the women's studies section. The "we" here is a consensus of women. Misogynists like you don't get to make the rules or give the choices. Option 1 the guy would be too fat. Option 2, a female fire fighter would be strong enuf to handle the job because she passed a test. So I'd be fine with that. Case in point, a female fire fighter did answer the question and she did have to pass a test and was assigned according to her abilities like the men were. The misogynist response was to ignore the facts and correct her grammar. Not very mature. Option 3 is I save myself by a predetermined fire escape plan. This is the most likely option. I choose 3.

What is misandrist whinging? I don't care which fire fighter saves me. I assume the one has brute strength and the other has been trained to manage without brute strenght. When I was a little guy my dad taught me how to move heavy things around without getting hurt. I would have to assume female fire fighters are nice people who want to help others and have been trained to do that. I'd just be glad if anyone wanted to come into a burning building to save me. Would you? Most people wouldn't. So I would take either fire fighter. Whoever got to me first. I want to live.

I would rather choose option #1. You make a good point and anyone who can't answer the question and instead attack you clearly have issues. I find it rather racist (or whatever may apply) that someone who choose to attack you based on bad structural sentence or spelling mistakes. They don't even stop to think that the person may not be English or may not care about writing in proper form over the Internet. Those people only display their OWN ignorance.
EDIT
''fire academy doesnt care if you are male or female. we all have to pass the same physical and classroom tests.''
This is what one of the above posters said. (Note the spelling and syntax mistakes.) They key phrase here is ''in the classroom''. This does not apply for physical tests.

A man will answer #1.
A real women will answer #1.
A feminist will answer #2 because they are blind to their political belieft. This is fine, because it means that both the feminist fireman and feminist will both likely perish.
