You can't be an English teacher anywhere in the U.S. that I know of without a college degree (to Eeyorecu: a Cal State is a University; Cal State is short for California State University). You need to know more than your students do to do a decent job of teaching. As for personal development and independence, these are things we would like college students to develop, but it is clear that not all students learn these things, and also that many who do not go to college become very responsible adults.

I agree. I did not continue further than High School level as it wasn't not encouraged by those in my environment at that time...that was 30 years ago.

My children (ages 14, 17, 20) . . . they've known since young childhood the importance and value to having a higher degree as it creates more choices and opportunities for them which they may or may not utilize . . . yet by having a college degree...at lease those choices are available for them as they journey through life.

My eldest attends the Academy of Arts in San Francisco and she is enjoying her college experience.
