I asked this question a while ago, because I'd hope to visit Japan one day too. Here's my post:

The only way to really tell how they act is to visit it yourself. White people's perspectives and experiences would be completely different from a Black's, so... who knows? I think when the Japanese hear the word American, they think White person, not Black person.

I am a Caucasian, but live in Shanghai and travel around China frequently. Our church has a number of black members. There are many African students in universities here. Actually, there have been long-term relations between China and many African countries (something that goes back to the Cold War). Black tourists are not everywhere - especially in rural areas- but you would not even provoke a stare or second look in most larger cities and tourist destinations. In general, the Chinese are friendly and you should not have any problems. In fact, if you are attractive and have a good personality, I suspect you might be popular.

Well, their going to be very surprised to see an African American since it is not what their used to seeing though you may see some pointing and staring. But the Japanese are very polite and well mannered, so no worries.

I am white and especially when I visited small villages or out in the country people would stare at me. I am sure they will stare at you too. The people are very nice there and so polite. You will enjoy; but make sure you take plenty of money, as it is very expensive there. Cheers.

They will stare at you. Anything out of the ordinary will get looks from them.
Imagine being in the whitest place you've ever been and quadruple it. That's how much you will stick out. That is not to say they won't be friendly. They were all very friendly when I was there. I'm not black but I was getting stares because I'm over 6 feet tall.

I have heard of black people experiencing racism....but that is generally long term residents. As a short term visitor, you will get lots of looks especially in the country....but all foreigners get that.
I am (very)white.....so I can`t talk from experience......though I know I get a lot of attention in the country, but NONE in Tokyo.
