It's very common in rats..give your friend plenty of fresh veggies..whole grains, nuts ( almonds the best), raspberries,
egg whites ( Hard boiled and and just the whites and no yolk)
and lots of love.

Cancer is common in rats I'm afraid. As far as I know they haven't discovered anything that can halt or slow its progress. Rodent oncology just isn't that advanced!

Cancer shortens rodent lives quite a lot I'm afraid. If it's a fast growing tumour then you might even want to have the rat euthanized rather than have him die. I had a mouse who grew an ENORMOUS lump under her arm. I called it a day when it got ridiculously big - it spread all the way under her chin and across her chest, she could still use that arm (just about) but was having trouble fitting into the mouse houses and stuff. She didn't actually SEEM like she was suffering but I figured she must be - besides, I didn't want her to get to the point where she was obviously suffering.

I think the best thing you can do is just continue to feed the correct rat-mix/nugget diet. Be aware that supplementation can cause more problems than it solves in animals - we rarely know what causes the tumour, so you may well end up supplementing the tumour rather than the rat if you know what I mean. The night before I had my mouse put to sleep I tipped a huge pile of treats in with her - she was a fatty anyway so i figured this would be a good last night for her!

Not sure about things that will help a rat with cancer, but I do know that it's best to stay away from citrus fruits (especially if the rat is male), because it can cause more complications.

I do know this:
Purple grapes have more cancer-prevention phytochemicals than green grapes.
