In 1861, John Oakley invented a washing machine. Horace Williams and John Alberger invented a process to make "grape sugar"--granulized sugar. Dennis Littlefield invented a coal-burning cooking stove that fed coal pretty much like today's pelletized wood stoves. In 1863, Adolph Millochau invented a method to treat petroleum ("or other bituminous substances") as a substitute for linseed oil in paint mixtures. In 1864, U. H. Shockley made an improvement to the grain drill (a planter that didn't require plowing and discing the ground. In 1864, William and Oliver Halstead figured out a way to mix common fuels such as coal, coal tar, and wood chips. In 1865, Aristide Dubreuil invented a boiler still to make lubricating grease from "rock oil" (petroleum).

And because transporting food that remained edible there were developments in food and food preservation. Several inventors made tin cans that kept the food inside potable for long periods of time. Thus, allowing the food to be transported over long distances.

I gave Jube a big thumbs up for his answer. Preserving and storing foods was a big thing. At that time we had Lea & Perrins Worschtershire Sauce, and Hormel canned ham.

The cotton gin, telegraph machine, sewing machine, the railroad, new surgical instruments and procedures including using antiseptic, the coffee percolator, refined sugar, the cylinder lock, the chronograph, plastic and the first gas auto engine.
