thanks you guys now how do i find the whole when all i have is the percent example: 40% of what number is 160 show formula

9 is what part of 180?

9/180=.05 or 5%


40% of what number is 160?

step 1: 160 = .40[or 40%] multiplied by x
step 2: 160/.40= x
step 3: x = 400

40% of 400 is 160

Use the percent proportion....IS/OF = %/100. Then you plug in the numbers...9/180 =p/100. Cross multiply and you get 180p = 900. Divide by 180 and you get 5%. If you want it as a fraction 5% = 1/20. Now 40% of what number is 160...use the proportion.....160/n = 40/100. Cross multiply ...40n = 16000. Divide by 40 and you get n = 400. So 40% of 400 is 160. Works all the time.

It's a matter of reduction. If you put 9 over 180 (in fraction form), then you can do the following:

(9/180) / 9 = 1/20

Therefore, 9 is 1/20 (or 5%) of 180.
