What "tango" do you mean? Do you mean Argentine tango, American ballroom tango, or international tango (British)? Within Argentine tango, do you mean close-embrace, open-embrace, milonguero, or fantasia?

Best recommendation is to take lessons.

I couldn't agree more with Mark. I'd been doing American ballroom tango for only a short time, and probably couldn't have managed a decent four-step in Modern Tango (International) when I first tried close-embrace Argentine style. The difference was, or at least felt, much greater than the difference between, say waltz and foxtrot. And we could give you a description of the eight-count basic in American ballroom, or the eight or ten step basic pattern in Argentine, and it would do you no good whatsoever. Pick a style and take lessons, in person. Figures are figures, and you can get them from a book or a video, but they have very little to do with dancing. That statement makes no sense to non-dancers, but all trained dancers know it's a simple truth. Connection, and all the important things in dance, are learned by feel, not by sight or hearing.

If you are talking about Argentine Tango, my recommendation is to take lessons, enjoy them and your dance. Don’t think of “buying one kilo, litre or hour of steps”. Choose your favourite teacher, according to your favourite style, let him/her develop your attitude, your posture, your balance and elegance. Then you’ll have to develop your connection with your partner, which is the most important in Tango. Fancy steps or figures come later, or even you can create your own ones, respecting the basics of Tango and its essence. Otherwise you are not dancing Argentine Tango.
