i want to be a english professor in a university

I would start with English grammar and end at a Bachelor's degree and hope you become famous and get an honorary doctorate. You AND the first respondent to your question should both take this route. A PhD in literature doesn't pay any money anyway...Everyone I know who got a PhD in English or Russian or French literature (and didn't drop out after year 3) is now in law school hoping to get a real job
