It's all over the news that China has spent millions of dollars "investing" in oil production in Sudan. According to CBS, Sudan has been using a lot of that money to fund the Janjaweed who are committing genocide on "non-arabs." Would a boycott of Chinese-made products help end the genocide in Darfur? By the way, yes, I am completely aware that Chinese-made products have flooded the American marketplace (and this is probably true worldwide). **I also understand that the "People's Republic" keeps wages so low, it is virtually impossible to compete with them. (That is why we have lost so many manufacturing jobs in the U.S.) By the way, I don't feel bad at all about criticizing the Chinese government and its autocratic/dictatorial system that exploits its people while destroying the economies of other countries.

I can't believe how (some) of the responses were so passive and uncritical. Just because something is difficult, it doesn't mean we should abandon our country's beliefs in freedom and justice. **Why doesn't the genocide of our fellow human beings concern them at all?? Is it because they don't care about black people? **By the way, I agree with the responders who criticized China for the use of harmful chemicals that killed so many pets in this country. **I also agree with the people who criticized China's policy on Religious freedom and its Tibet policy.

The PRC is a totalitarian state...I don't know why we buy their crap anyway. Every dollar spent on a product made in the PRC provides more resource for a true strategic enemy of the United States, our traditions, institutions, and way of life.

I've tried my best to not buy stuff made in the PRC for years.

Doesn't it shock anyone that its hard to find stuff not made in the PRC?

Would you have bought stuff made in 1938 Germany?

I am buying "Made in USA" whenever possible, and particularly avoiding products made in China when there is an option of something made elsewhere ... Honduras, Guatemala, Vietnam, Malaysia ... anywhere but China, if there's a choice. And, if there's no other option at the store I'm in at the moment, I will usually shop around to find something before finally giving my money to companies that are giving our industrial base and world economic influence to a Communist nation. Did you read the article a few weeks ago in Newsweek or Time, can't remember which, with quotes from young people in China? My heart broke for them. Not the factory workers -- the brainwashed communist consumers! They don't care that they have no voice, that the government 'owns' them, so long as they get their shiny toys. I hope we don't get that way too soon.

Then what would be left to buy? Have you forgotten how many of our products are made in China? So many of our things are made in China that you could never get enough people to boycott them to make any impact. Even if you did, and China stopped putting money in Darfur (which I highly doubt) the genocide still wouldn't stop. The Janjaweed wouldn't stop hating non-Arabs because China isn't giving the government money.

Boycott Chinese products for a lot of reasons: Taiwan, Tibet, Falu Gong, house churches, Democratic reformers, conscientious objectors to the "two children or one son" policy. It's a good idea. But you'll have to be very careful when you buy anything new. A lot of things are "Made in China."

Let's not forget how they poisiened our pets. I agree with you, we should denounce them the same way we do Cuba. It really makes no sense to me, but then who am I, why we won't trade with Cuba, even making it against the law to buy their cigars but we buy everything from China. If someone could enlighten me on this I'd be grateful, just leave out the part where I'm stupid, I get enough of that from news reporters and my government leaders.

NO boycott them to stop the poisoning here.
First it was the pet food with melamine, which was fed to hogs which ended up in OUR foodchain
Then it is banned antibiotics found in catfish imported from the PRC.
Then we can boycott to stop genocide.

Not that CBS is a news source of reputation, (Dan Rather incident), I suspect that the Sudanese can sell their oil elsewhere if the Chinese stop.

Chinese products have taken over almost everything we, as consumers, buy. As soon as what you already own starts breaking down, be prepared to start living a minimalist life.

Yeah, good luck boycotting everything made from China. I'm looking around my office right now - I know I'm surrounded by Chinese goods...even the water I'm drinking - I'm sure the bottle was made in China.

I don't know but as soon as I heard about it I decided to not fund that country with my money ever again. I think a boycott is a good idea.
