best bet is to buy a package (bass, amp, cords..other various things). it will be cheaper than buying them separate. they range from 99-250 dollars. bass strings are more expensive than standard guitar strings but they last for years compared to 3-5 months. as for the ipod, go to radio shack and look for a 1/4 inch adapter. most amps that feature a cd/auxilary plug are 150+

Your going to have to spend a little money if you want something decent. My first bass equipment was a starter pack from Fender. You get the Squier P-bass, an Amp an Instructional video the bag, some picks and a strap.I think it was around 200 dollars. You also have to remember that stuff for bass is a lot more expensive. E.g: Bass strings are anywhere from 16.00 to 30.00 compared to guitars at 2.50 to 7.00. The amps are at least double, and the instruments are going to be more expensive. The strings last longer, but they are not going to last years.Realistically they'll last depending on how much you play them. If you play every day, then your probably going to want to change them every other week.

Been there, done that, got the amps to prove it. If you're using an amp for HOME USE and PRACTICE USE, all you need is love - I mean 15 watts of love - no - just 15 watts. The Fender Rumble series has the best practice amps for the price and quality. The Fender Rumble 15 is 15 watts and is perfect for home practice use. It's $99.99 (a little less than $115, with tax) and that's as cheap as a GOOD QUALITY amp will get. Any questions?
