Yes. Both parties should be fired. If this happened off company time and off company property, the answer is no.

People have a misconception of bosses...They think that bosses are mean, crude, unreasonable, but it's not true. A boss has his/her business first policy. If you are good for the business no one will fire you, if you are a problem employee, and had problems in the pass bosses will use the most recent infraction to get rid of you. No boss in their right mind will get rid of an employee that is good for the business.
Was it really self defense? was this a continuous problem? Did you have problems before? Are other employees complaining about you? Have you been late a lot? I just want you to examine what i wrote here I don't know you. You may have one of those bosses that are mean, crude, and unreasonable but check yourself first because if there is a problem you will be taken it to your next job, and if you do you may have the same results. Yes i sound like a boss..I am, but I was a star employee for many many years before i became my own boss. Bow if you feel that this was really unfair there are agencies that can help you. Were you union?

Yes. If the fight was inside the workplace then you had other options. No one wants to have someone that fights as an employee. It is too expensive in the long run.

Evidently you gave as good as you got. Hand to hand combat is not a mature way to handle yourself on the job. It sucks that you didn't start it, but you were wrong too if they opted to fire you.
