I'm 18 (in the UK) and I want to drive over to France. Would that be ok? I heard you have to be over 25 but that just sounds daft to me.

Depends on the country.

Minimum driving age:
The minimum driving age in France is 18yrs with a Full UK License. Drivers who have passed their test within two years are restricted to speeds below 110kph on motorways, 100kph on urban motorways and 80kph outside built up areas.

I think you'll have to wait a while, as you won't have held your driving licence for a full year. Here are the rules for France:
A valid driving licence needs to have been held for at least 1 year
Must be in Western Script.
You must be at least 18 years of age with a full UK licence for most locations in France. Drivers who have passed their test within the previous two years are restrcted to speeds of below 110kph on motorways, 100kph on urban motorways and 80kph outside built up areas.
You must be at least 20 years old and have held a full driving licence for at least a year to rent a car. Insurance is compulsory.

Sorry, but that's the way things are.

Each country has its laws. When you enter another country, especially if you are going to be representing your country, which you do when you go abroad, you then abide by the host country's laws. It is easy enough to find out by going on the internet. Personally I think 18 is the correct age for France too.

Safest way to be sure it's okay is to obtain an International Driver's License. It isn't hard to find a place to get one in Europe, just ask a local policeman.
