I'm going to be living in a studio apartment by myself either way, but I'm just wondering what the laws are, and what the minimum age is to live by yourself- if there is one.

Please don't start ranting about safety issues and pedophiles, etc- I'm more in danger in my home than I'd be in an apartment.

The apartment will be in my dad's name and meant to be for him- obviously the owners can't find out there's a 14 year old living by herself. Please help if you can.

Thanks.

The problem is that a 14-year-old cannot legally enter into a contract, whether a lease or rental agreement or for electricity, cable or telephone services, etc. Anyone other than a parent or legal guardian who signs such a contract or allows a minor to do so could be charged with abetting the delinquency of a minor or similar charge among others. Needless to say, a parent or legal guardian who allows such a thing would also be open to those charges.

If you have a problem at home, report it to the police or the local child protection agency, or to a doctor, counsellor, nurse, etc., all of whom are "mandated reporters" and will have to report it to the police or the child protection agency.

The help that you are asking for, in simple terms, AIN'T OUT THERE.
Your dad would be breaking the law. End of story. Parents have the legal responsibility to insure the safety of the child, adequate supervision, etc.. until the child is 18 (or otherwise a legal adult, ie married).
I am not going to rant about safety issues. Child protective services are the ones who would do so, and with good reason and legal authority.
IF you are in fact in danger in your home, the answer is to remove the danger, not the child. NOT in judgement on that.. I have a daughter with severe bipolar, who was often a very real danger to herself and others in the home.
Aside from what they would consider neglect, he would also be liable for fraud (lying to the apartment owners).
Sorry to come down so hard, but this is not even thinkable.

That's tricky. Nobody is going to turn YOU over to the police, as long as you're not breaking the law otherwise. But your parents could get arrested for neglect.
The question is, CAN you live alone? Can you cook your own meals, do your own laundry, go shopping, clean the apartment, and all the other things an adult has to do? It was tough living by myself at 19, are you sure you're ready for it at 14?

You would have to be 18 to live by yourself. You could get emancipated but you have to show that you have a job to support living on your own.
Are you sure this is your only option?
Why isn't your mom standing up for you?
Why can't you live with dad?
It's been a while but I've helped a few out in your situation. Drop me a line if you need life advice or something.
Good luck.

I am not a law expert by any stretch of imagination, but I do have some advice. It is not legal at all for a 14 year old to live by his/herself. If the authorities found out that you were living by yourself, they would probably take custody away from your parents, and/or put you in a foster home. However, they might not. If you do, in fact, decide to live by yourself, please, be careful...

I normally landlords don't rent out to anyone that is younger then 18 but I guess it's going to be in your fathers name and he has no problem with it. I don't see what the harm is and if your in more danger at home

If you really have such problems at home, why don't the cops know about it?
