I have a 41/2 month old and he screams when he wants something. He is very highpitched. LOL Why does he do this? When I put him down for a nap/bedtime and when he is hungry are the only times he does this. He doesn't do it when he wakes up after sleeping for 9 hrs. I do let him cry for 10 minutes before I go and check on him, unless he is really mad, could this be why he is screaming now? Please don't tell me not to let him cry, I already asked a question if I should do this or not. I just want to know why he is screaming now. He isn't sick either. Thank you!

he is getting to the vocal stage, this is when they start developing "different cries" if you listen closely you will begin to distinguish between his "i am mad, I am hurt, I am faking it" cries. He is also learning that crying helps him express himself and it gets a reaction out of you. he is screaming to demand what he wants. letting him cry for 10 minutes is fine and most likely has nothing to do with his screaming now. He just wants what he wants now. be patient and tell him in a firm voice "it is sleep time" or " Wait a minute" he wont understand the words but will understand the tone, this may help him stop quicker. It is a phase and could last a few weeks to a few years. good luck.

You are doing the right thing by letting him cry because that is how they develope the lungs. And keep in mind that even at such a young age they are still testing their limits. Like if I scream long enough will I get picked up or mom whats long enough and baby falls asleep and after awhile baby learns to just lay down and sleep or to just what for the food to come because it will.

my son did the exact same thing at the same age. I did the same thing with the crying, but that has nothing to do with it. My doctor said the crying at bedtime/naptime is just separation anxiety and to avoid the screams when he is hungry to keep him on a rigid feeding schedule. Hope that helps!

I think they just do it. My 5 1/2 month old does it too, sometimes when she's not hungry and doesn't seem to want anything. I think it's part of their developmental process - and I think they are learning more about their vocal capabilities.
