Yes, you can damage your eyes with exposure to sunlight. Two people who I know personally have been diagnosed with melanoma of the eye. One of these people is only thirty two years old.

Once melanoma is detected in the eye, it must be treated first with chemotherapy pellets right into the eye and left for a couple of weeks to do it's work. Only then, can they do a biopsy to see if the melanoma is malignant or benign.

The reason this procedure is followed is because of the volatile nature that the fluid from the eye can have, if the tumor is malignant. The fluid from the eye, if it gets into the body, acts on a fast track in contaminating the body, and if it's malignant, cancer will grow throughout the body . So, as a precaution, treatment, even before they know the status of the tumor, is provided, first !

Sorry about the long prognoses regarding your question, it's just to let you know the seriousness of abusing you eyes, when you are young !

Yes, you can damage your eyes without looking directly into the sun. Do you get headaches on sunny days? That may be because of the sun. Wear a hat and sunglasses.

One thing not yet mentioned. One normally associates the eye condition "cataracts" with old age and the elderly. However, prolonged exposure to the sun without sunglasses can accelerate the onset of cataracts. You might not make it to age 65 without cataract surgery.

Hi babe, if you do not protect your eyes from the sun, you'll end up getting Episcleritis like me. (I spelled that diagnosis wrong, I can not recall the correct spelling). That's what happened to me since I never protected my eyes from the hot Caribbean sun. My eyes has always been sensitive though, hopefully you do not have that same problem. You should protect your eyes so you don't end up having problems with them later on. :)
