I am an Orthodontist and probably can help you with this question. Braces are no longer a stigma in the society. It is actually becoming a fashion statement now. I have lots of patients in their adult life, who is opting for braces.
One of the most common nick names, I heard from my patients are "brace face" " grill boy/girl" etc. But it is easy to ignore them when you take into consideration that by the end of the treatment, you will have health beautiful smile and they don't.
Regarding colors, there is definite desire for school colors, followed by holidays and last but not least seasons. You cant go wrong with colors. Your Orthodontist probably has a color wheel, where you can mix and match different colors. My only advice is avoid reds, if your gums are not healthy. White looks tacky and any kind of clear ties stain easily. I had my braces in my 30's and I loved silver because it is neutral and did not stain. Hope that helps. Good luck.

I had braces way back when they only came in silver. I also had a retainer and elastics... WOOHOO. LOL. Hun, it should be ok. If you're friends understand they won't say anything and will be supportive. No one ever said anything to me and I came out 2 years later with beautiful straight teeth. You'll love them for life, trust me. Just hold you're head high ;-) It's so worth it.

never had that problem. but then half my class had them at the same time as me. in 7th and 8th grade we all had braces, got them removed 8th - 10th grade and then all had our wisdom teeth out as seniors.
i had plain old fashioned silver ones. but that was back in the late 80s and your only choice was silver or the icky clear ones that turned yellow. i don't get the colored thing actually. looks strange.

i had them removed in Jan! and it was well worth the 2yrs that i wore them. I got them in many many colours, changing every month, and nah, no one called me names. In fact, braces are getting so hip now in asia that Thailand's offering fake braces services! so cheer up!

I too only had the choice of silver with gray rubber bands. Back in our day, we had to worry about headgear too. You young'uns have it lucky. I would have loved to have fun colors!
Think about Ugly Betty... she's got confidence and is loved by all of America!
