I mean the film in general, rather then the charecter, The charecter though is deffinatley a genius.

Genius. I'm not really sure why tho, I'll have a stab at explaining myself....
Hm. Um. Er.....well it's a weird story, but I think it's told brilliantly - how would you ever see that ending coming? I actually think the 'director's cut' version is better than the theatrical for a change - it goes into more depth and explains things a bit more. I don't mean it lays the story out on a plate for all to see, it just adds more detail and depth for you to think about - like the whole suggestion of Donnie actually being a superhero because he has some measure of control over the elements (time, water, fire).
I can sort of see why people would say this film is a 'mess' - it's probably the weirdest (decent) film I've ever seen, and certainly it isn't straight forward. But I think Richard Kelly had knew what he was trying to portray, it wasn't just an aimless piece.
I also think any movie that's this wide open to interpretation and causes as much discussion as it has must have something in it! I really think a lot of thought went into writing and producing it, which impresses me. This film wasn't just churned out, it was someone's baby.
Having great acting and a brilliant, original score and selection of great '80s tunes doesn't hurt either! :-)

Genius - I've seen a similar question posted before and it always makes me watch it again! The song Mad World has haunted me for years.

I was kind of bored to be honest. I know there's meant to be some big secret about what's really going on but it just went way over my head. The acting was great but I just didn't warm to anybody and didn't really care when it ended (plus the character who got run over was clearly a dummy and that was rubbish). I had no feelings about it one way or the other, just a small 'meh, whatever'. I was pretty much underwhelmed after all the hype.

films that are hype usually turn out to be crap, i liked the start hated the middle and despised the end. i liked the fact that the girl playing his sister was his sister in real life and jake is an excellent actor. but the film itself was flawed.
