a square foot is a measure of area. a cubic foot is a measure of volume.

measuring area is a two-dimensional problem. An example is finding how many square feet of carpeting you need to cover the floor of your bedroom. Multiplying the length of the bedroom by the width will give you the number of square feet you need.

measuring volume is a three-dimensional problem. An example is finding how much water will fill your swimming pool. multiplying the length by the width by the depth will give you the volume.

hope that helps.

forget the mathematics and ask yourself the difference between a square and a cube. A square is a drawing made up of four lines all meeting at 90degree angles. it's flat on your paper and without depth. That is what a square foot is measuring, the size or area within that square.

A cube is made up of a top, bottom, two sides and a front and back like a carboard box and to measure the size or area within it you must use cubic feet.
