It's reported that it's largely down to media coverage.
William had to move away to work in the Army. Even in his absence Kate was still hounded by paparazzi, and I think the pressures of being in the spotlight were too much for her. Allegedly William is reluctant to commit himself at the moment too, as he's still quite young and rumour has it Kate had asked for marriage.
They've yet to make an official announcement, so it's all speculation.

there are so many versions...
1) About her mother. I heard that she did not behave the way she had to with the Queen.
2) Wiliam did not want to marry her yet.
3) They had a fight.
4) The Royal family didn't like Kate.
5) William fancies another girl.
6) There was to much pressure from Paparazzi.
7) It is just a way of getting more attention to them.(this isn't probably true)
you could think if many other reasons.

I have no idea. I overheard someone saying something about chewing gum, but I don't know what that means. I'm guessing Kate broke the code of royal etiquette when she was chewing gum at some public event.
Edit: Looked it up. It's was Kate's mother, not Kate herself. Kate's mother was chewing gum when she was introduced to the queen. She didn't greet the Queen in the proper manner and she also used words that the nobility consider inappropriate to use in polite conversation. Grandma was probably too offended to let Willie and Kate stay together.

It appears that daddy Charles gave young wills some sound advise based on experience, you don't lead a girl on if you don't intend making the relationship permanent. Wills is too young to settle down, would you if you had that kind of life with all the power and money only imaginable by us mere mortals?

I've read that that was the case too. The papers say she was frigid, and prefered to eat peanut butter then vomit it up than go out with William. But thats just speculation.

He wasn't interested in marriage at this time;he's off to military duties which are expected to take two years;she ,it has been reported didn't want to wait.They just weren't ready to make that big step into marriage.
