the heater duct is open. that is where the heater duct opening is in a car.....under the dash, by your feet. it might be stuck open, or you don't have it turned off all the way, or the cable to turn it off is broke. some vehicles control the heat by a cable going to the duct work, and some vehicles have a valve in the heater hose, with a cable on it to regulate the heat. if it was your exhaust, it would have burned the carpet, and would be on one side or the other, not on both sides.

Yes, it happens!
How old is your car? If it is too old, may be its time to look at the firewall (firewall is the legroom area---which you are refering to---touching the engine bay). Check if it is getting rusty and the heat wave is passing through the tiny holes into the cabin through the legroom. Hence you may feel this area hot.
The second reason may be the sponge gasket which seals the pinion (to which the steering column joint is attached). If this gasket has been removed during any routine service or if you have removed the rack & pinion steering then the heat wave will enter the cabin via this hole. Generally, if this hole is open then water will also seep in. Check if this is a problem.
Thirdly, check the A/C ductings passing through the wall.

This should solve your problem.

That could be a serious problem. If the engine is not running properly, the exhaust gases could be overheating the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter.

If this is something that just started to happen, I'd have it checked out right away.

Otherwise you could have a "Car-B-Q"
