It initially started in the late 40's early 50's when France was fighting the Vietnamese. It was still in the early stages of the Cold War and France asked us for help in fighting the communists (Vietnamese). President Truman helped by sending advisors. Later on (after the French were defeated and the country was devided in two) President Eisenhower we took a series of steps involving ourselves more such as sending large numbers of money, more advisors, and supporting the creation of the Bank Of Vietnam. Under John Kennedy the most drastic event took place when approved (through the CIA) the assassination of the South Vietnamese President. After Kennedy was assasssinated himself, Lyndon Johnson became president and i think it was just before or just after he was elected in his own right The Gulf of Tonkin incident took place and Vietnam and we did what we did from then on.
