If you're creative, try wood carving. It doesn't take electricity -- hand carving, that is -- and can be done almost anywhere. You can get the starting tools and such rather inexpensively, and see how you like it. Keep at it, of course, so you have time to get good at it. If you do get good at it, this will not only give you something fun to do, but will also be of great help when Christmas rolls around! You'll e able to make gifts for people that they will treasure.
Of course, if you're not creative, you could try baking. I know you're a guy, but baking is really applied chemistry and mathematics -- with deliciously edible results! You don't need to get fancy and use pretty colors on things, like the girls do, but you can make some delicious stuff that you and your friends will love to eat.
Then, there's gardening, chess clubs, going the library, taking a class in something with others who have similar interests. Try a sign language (or other language) course, if you have no interests yet. Volunteer to help at the local animal shelter, if you're up to it. They always need all the help they can get!

The newest thing is called ATC's (Artist Trading Cards) and you can do this all whilst sitting on yer' duff !!!
Several yahoo groups and sites for ATC's and after you make the card, you can arrage a "TRADE" with someone.
Doing art, making friends and getting art in return....sounds like a good idea, huh ?
There is also a few books out about ATC's and the beauty of it all is, there is no rules or limits as to what you can do BUT all the cards have to be 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches so if you like collage or painting or stamping or whatever...do it on a card and trade it whilst making a friend and you get some pretty cool things in return !!!!
You can even get onto a group where they trade used art supplies so if you have stamped all you can of one stamp, you can trade it with someone for something new !?!
I feel your pain, I have a wonky back and am about to have surgery....feel better and contact me if you'd like to know more about ATC's ")

You could get a rubber stamp and do Where's George. It's a game where you follow the progress of paper money as it's spent all around the country. http://www.wheresgeorge.com is the website.
