I heard somewhere that Crosby had a broken foot in the 1st round of the play-offs. Why do teams allow their star players to play injured and run the risk of losing them permanently?

It is true. But it's not like his entire foot was busted up; it was a small bone that was broken in his foot. With an injury like that, Crosby was still able to play. I'm sure that it wasn't too comfortable for him, but he managed to play through it.

Playing through injuries is something that pro players do from time to time - regardless of the sport. It was Crosby's first appearance in a Stanley Cup playoff round and I don't think he would've missed being there for anything. For example, his teammate Ryan Whitney also played through injury and he just underwent surgery on his wrist this week.

Team doctors and surgeons know just how far they can let a player go without permanently damaging him. If there was a cause for concern, Sid wouldn't have played a game or two. He's getting rested up and healthy now by missing out on playing with team Canada. He'll be all ready for next season - so watch out!!

His foot got injured mid-March.

They allow him to play because the Stanley Cup is what these guys play the game for.

It's only 1 team that wins the cup out of 30 every year. It's so difficult to win it that teams go all out every year by making trades at the deadline just to pick up a veteran with playoff experience to help their team of youngsters (ie: Roberts for Pittsburgh this year).

It's all about the Cup.

He broke a bone in his foot around March 16th. He is the one who wanted to play with it. He asked the trainers and doctors if he could still play with it and they said he could. There really isn't anything that can be done for a broken foot anyway. If the star wants to play with the injury and it won't cause them permanent damage to play with it, then it's the star's decision to play.

Yes it is true ... got a puck in the foot during a Montreal game. Not going to lose him permanently for that and he wanted to play. Not much going to keep someone like that off the ice in that situation.

He broke it two weeks before the season ended...it was obviously an injury that the doctors and team decided would not be hurt any worse by playing on it.

He broke his foot in march and played on it for a month. I don't think he told anyone because he wanted to play in the playoffs. I mean come on the Stanley cup is the chance of a life time and he is a young kid still. He didn't want to be benched for that, I wouldn't either !!! Tho I don't know how he could play like that because I have broken my leg before and it hurt like hell!! kudos for putting up with pain, no kudos for not doing anything...

The trainers and doctors keep a close eye on any and all injuries to all the players and if it looks like it is worsening they will refuse to give them the ok to play. They watch them in practice and do all sorts of diagnostic tests to ensure that the player isn't in pain.

Because he is really good. His coaches/trainers probably didn't want him to play further but he insisted. ex..I once broke 3 ribs but we were down 2-3 so I didn't tell anyone. I was in alot of pain but we won the game..

It's not unheard of. Bobby Baun broke his leg in a playoff game and came back to score the winning goal later in OT.

The trainers would not have allowed him to play if it would have caused further or permanent damage.
