talent
art or fashion design degree
lots of contacts
if you are starting from scratch, its better to join an existing company. then you can get yourself a good following and portfolio. So then when you do start your own thing, youll have a client base waiting for you, And you'll know lots of people who will be able to do things to help you on your way. You will also have a decent amount of money to invest in things like shop makeovers, assistants, better quality resources etc

Melinda, you've got to re-do a doll bed sheet or an apron, to show to a university that teaches fashion designing. Or, you'd better enroll yourself at a private fashion designing institute. You must show an institute what you can do and have done, regarding your skills at designing clothes. You should display your basic clothes-skills, including designing and stitching. The main thing is to join any good institute, to learn the art of designing fashions and clothes. Now smile, don't waste your moments, and join an institute or university.

You should have a great eye for fashion, what's in at the moment etc. but also have something unique in your designs! If it's not unique, there's really no point because it'd look like everything else that is out there! Maybe try and do a course in fashion and design at a college, university or whatever. Or try and find some local shops to take a look at your work and see if they'd be interested in buying it. Enter competitions that are looking for new, upcoming designers etc.

Like people have said - talent and originality. You don't need any particular qualifications as ultimately it's your portfolio of designs that will determine whether you make it or not (whether you apply for work at a fasion design company or try to set yourself up).
That said, most fashion designers will have been to university and will have undertaken a degree in fashion design.

Money. You can hire talent. You can rent a store. Advertise like crazy, especially in the fashion magazines. Make a website. All you need is money. If you have money you can do all of these things. And, pretty soon, you will have clients and customers who want what you are selling.

You would need to find a factory that would be willing to make your designs.
Then you would need a company willing to sell your items.
Or start your own shop
