If she's old enough to kick off the blanket, it's time to forget blankets entirely for a while. Just dress her more warmly if the nights are chilly ... put socks on her feet, even inside the pj's ... and make sure her bed isn't in a draft. She'll do fine and you'll have one less worry.

If baby sleeps in a crib, tuck the blanket in under the mattress on all three sides, and place baby's arms on top of the blanket and hold the blanket to your mouth to make sure you can breathe through it.
It is generally better to dress the baby in warm clothes than to put a blanket on, ditto for the parents if the baby co-sleeps. We co-sleep, keep the thermostat at 59 degrees, and generally sleep in underwear, though, so I am a bit of a hypocrit. what makes me feel better, is we don't use comforters or sheets, just one surprisingly warm fleece blanket that i have tested using the aforementioned technique. I still wake in the middle of the night and check to make sure baby is not inundated, but he never is. The few times he has had the blanket over his head, he has been perfectly happy and breathing well.

You cant stop it, I had to put my youngest in warm winter type jammies and no blanket. We also started keeping our house a little warmer. She is 6 now and is still the same way, if I wake up and look in, her blankets are always off of her, she is just a restless sleeper.

perhaps it is too warm, and that is why the blanket gets kicked off. Warm PJs would do it, and there are many good suggestions above, there may be no need for the blanket at all. The baby will cry if it is cold.

I have an idea. If she is five months old she should be able to turn around from her back to her stomach and vice versa but if she doesnt. You can clip the blanket with bib clips so that the blanket securely stays down.... just an idea. My daughter used to kick the blanket off when she was trying to move around or play with her legs/feet. maybe your 5 month old is doing that?
or you can buy a swaddler, or make one??

Scoot her down in the crib and tuck the other end under the mattress. If she can get it up there, she can get it off. My kids sleep like tornadoes (even in the warmers they would move all over). I went quite mad worrying about whether they would get themselves into trouble. Both of them managed to get their feet through the crib bars and turned around so they couldn't get them back into the crib (they are two years apart so at least it wasn't at the same time). Each of them yelled and screamed so loudly that I was able to see that they were plenty able to get a little blanket off of their faces. Incidentally, they are now 4 and 2 and my house is under lock and key as they are able to defeat anything but a metal key lock. I guess they are just able little men. Your daughter will be fine, but knowing that won't help you sleep.

Well my son has always liked to have his blankets over his face even when he was very little. As long as they can flip over and get away from the blanket they should be ok.

5 month olds should not sleep with a blanket. If you think she is cold, put her in some warmer pjs.

You could try a "sleep suit". It's like a sleeping bag with arms (available in most baby wear sections of department stores). They are generally fleecy and have a lot of room for them to kick their legs around. They are very cute too.
