depends upon her age. if she is young enough to still be considered marriage material, she is called a maiden. if she is considered past her prime, she is called a spinster.
the word comes from the idea that if a woman never married she must be engaged in something profitable, such as spinning yarn for making clothing, rather than just sit and be a drain on her father.
historically, women were considered a liability to the family whereas a male at any age was considered an asset.
