I have a 2002 Ford Focus and it won't start. Tried jumping it and that didn't work. I just installed a new battery about 2 weeks ago. Could it be my starter? When I try to turn over the motor I only hear a clicking sound. I also tried tapping on the starter, but that didn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

One "click", bad starter.
Rapid clicking, bad connections at battery. Or low battery.

First make sure your battery connections are shiny clean. They should have been when the battery was changed, but sometimes it gets missed...

Also, make sure other connections are tight too, on the solenoid at the fender, and on the starter itself...

If all that produces no change, it could be that the alternator isn't charging, or the starter motor itself could be bad...if it won't "jump start", it is probably the starter...

Ah, another Focus problem. My advice is to take it to the dealer. There have been a couple of electrical-related recalls on Focus models. If your new battery isn't defective, then you have a short someplace. Let them inspect it; if it's a recall item then you won't have to pay for it. And if it's simply a case of your new battery being defective, then you can take it back to where you got it and replace it for free as well. Rather than guessing and throwing parts at it that you don't need, go see the dealer and let them diagnose it. Hope this info helped.

I sounds like a battery thing. Your getting power to the starter but not enough.

Just because the bettery is new doesn't mean its good. If a battery takes a good hit (Dropped at some point or the car takes a good hit or bump) the little wafers inside will touch eachother and render the battery useless.

Take the battery back with a big fat "WTF?" . And have them replace it for free. Also, don't buy cheap batteries.

Good luck .

it has a bad connection or bad battery cable(s). Check with the dealer service department and see if possibly they have a recall on the battery cables, I'm not sure but I think they may have. Either way its a bad connection that causes the rapid clicking noise when trying to start.
