I usually do projects for weddings, new babies and new homes for my friends and family members. I try to think of something that coordinates with their theme or taste. For example, I found a project that had a ring of leaves and the phrase "Grow Old Along with me, the best is yet to be". I added the couples names and wedding date and gave it as a wedding gift for a fall wedding.
For gifts, I just go with a simple frame and mat finish so the receiver can hang it on their wall immediately.
I was in my LNS last weekend and saw a GORGEOUS finished project. A woman had purchased an old fashioned clock several years back, something similar to this one, except with a glass door over the whole front of the cabinet:

She had stitched a piece for the background of the shelf area and it was absolutely stunning when it was finished.
You could also do a jewelry box lid. I just did one for my niece for Christmas. I used a box intended to be a photo top box from Michaels - I sanded and painted the box, then designed a piece to go inside where the photo would go. It looked similar to this:

You could also do the whole box out of cross stitch, using a fine plastic canvas instead of fabric:

Look for a book called Hand-stitched boxes : plastic canvas, cross stitch, embroidery, patchwork by Meg Evans.

My mom once took a whole year to do this one Christmas cross stitch. It was of Santa and he had a bag of gifts and there was a background and everything. After she was done, she sewed it to a larger piece of clothe and put a wooden rod through the top to hang it. It is very beautiful. If you're up for the challenge, there's an idea for you. She also made little designs on the corners of a tablecloth. Personally, I made up a princess room for my little girl and I am thinking about cross stitching some fairy-tale pictures for her walls.
Hope I gave you some ideas.

I would suggest that you purchase a piece of felt in the same colour that the book marker is. Cut the felt to size, and glue the felt to the back of the book marker. This way the book marker stays soft and pliable, and will not be too bulky for marking your place in the book that you are reading. Felt if and when it gets wet will not get all soggy like cardboard does. You would still be able to wash your book marker if you needed to. Hope that this helps you out. By the way, learning how to "bury" the thread does take practice. Could your stitches be too tight, and that is why you are having a hard time with it? Just a thought. Happy cross-stitching.

I love to cross stitch, but unfortunately my wrists don't allow me to do much of it anymore. It also is a "slow" project, but the finished gift is beautiful. Some of the things that I have done are ring pillows for Weddings. Samplers - for new home or baby or wedding. Coasters - I like these because you can get one done in a night or two usually. I also like towels and bibs for "quicker" projects - within a week or so. Hope that helps.

I love to stitch the Shepherds Bush needle roll designs. Nothing is more fun to stitch!
Here's a fun framing idea. Put your design on stretcher bars. Then wrap fresh grapevine around it, attaching the first round with staples, then weaving in the rest. When the vine dries it turns a lovely brown. This works especially well with autumn designs.

Other ideas are bellpulls, pinkeeps or pin cushions, baby bibs or booties, table runners or quilt squares (michaels and other hobby stores have items needed for these). These items can also be found on ebay.
