Winzip, but how well depends on what kind of file, data files will not compress much but graphics can. What kind of files?

Not sure what you are trying to do, but there are ways to compress or separate the file into parts for archiving. I personally like winrar. With it, you can divide the file into parts, so that you can store it on stuff like a DVD or CD where it might not fit normally. Then, when you want the file back, you can just extract from the rars.

Compress it into a .RAR file by using winrar or .ZIP file (winzip, comes with XP) but I don't think that's as good for some reason.

I like winrar because you can choose to compress using rar or zip.

NOTE: Compressing MP3s, MPEGs, or even other zip or rar files will not compress it and usually results in "Anti-compression" where the files get bigger.

well, winrar is good for windows, gzip is good in linux
