Cover the wound with gauze.. or even a fresh tea towel. Apply pressure and don't let go. Take him to the hospital.. he'll need stitches and other medical care. Keep him alert and talking on the way.

I'm assuming you mean the cut is 8" wide.
Clean the wound thoroughly. Go to the drug store and get butterfly bandages (the little strips). Put some neosporin or other topical antibiotic on it to thwart infection.
It it continues to bleed, it's time for stitches.

Or is it 8 inches long?
If it's 8 inches deep, you need to call an ambulance.
If it's 8 inches long, he needs to go in and get stitches and a tetanus shot.
