My monitor is a Gateway VX900. It started lightly emitting an odor last week and now its getting stronger. Is this thing burning up? Is there anythingI can do? Can I clean the dust out of it using air? What are my options?

Yes! It probably signifies one of the electronic components [a resistor , IC, or diode] is going bad. This is a potential fire hazard. I highly recommend unplugging the monitor from the wall and not using it again until it has been serviced by an professional.
I am an aerospace technician. Anytime you smell an odor from any electronic device, unplug it immediately and have it serviced. Just turning it off will NOT do. As long as it it plugged into the wall socket it still has current running through it which can cause a fire.

It's very likely that you have a leaking capacitor in your monitor. Stop using it and have it repaired. Perhaps it is also time to move up to an LCD monitor.

It's emitting cosmic radiation. I'd replace it ASAP before you're infused with Cosmic Radiation Poisoning.
