Cation and anions...that is that cations are mainly (+), positive ions and Anions are( -), negative. Such as on the periodic table. The elements on the left like Na has a [+2] charge meaning that it has 2 atoms to GIVE away and the element Cl which NEEDS 1 so it has a charge of [-1]. There for the ion of NaCl2 is formed.

Monatomic ions are broken up into cations, which are metal ions with a positive charge, and anions, usually nonmetals, which have a negative charge.
Polyatomic ions (which have many atoms bonded) usually behave like anions, with the exception of the ammonium (NH4) polyatomic ion and other exceptions
