I am doing a poetry project and i choose e.e cummings. I decided that i would choose the poem I carry your heart with me.
Here it is
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Can anyone help me understand this poem? what is he referring to? What is the meaning? And what is the theme of it?

serious answers please

I am supposed to do an illustration to explain the poem. I am thinking of doing a red heart in the middle of a paper and write traits and adjectives of everything you would find in a relationship or friendship or a sisterly/ motherly relationship. Then around it draw pictures of each type of bond that you can have with someone.

Is that good? i mean for this poem? does that illustrate its meaning?

once again serious answers thanks

to me, he is referring to a bonding with someone, a closeness,,,,,, its a romantic concept, that the one you love/care for,, becomes the total focus of your life , more popular in the past,,,,, nowdays a person is thought/expected to be autonomous, with the love adding to their lives, not consuming or becoming the focus of your life,,,,,, this poem sounds like the giving up of self to focus /be governed, by someone or something else,,,,, the line "whatever is done by me is your doing",,,,, shows that , to me this poem would show an obsession with another
ps: yes , your idea of the illustration , and bonding, sounds good, as that is what the poem is really talking about
