Common sense......

when it's done right.

Let's remember Bushie 'neocon' conservatism isn't real, TRADITIONAL conservatism.

The so called 'conservatism' we have now is more like fascism.

To me, the hallmark of conservatism is limited government. I don't call the current batch of republicans conservatives. Conservatives believe that the federal government should only be doing what it has to, and even then, when possible, work should be contracted out to private companies in an open bidding process.

Order of responsibility for taking care of any problem or issue:

1. The individual him or her self
2. Family and friends of person needing help
3. Church or charity of person needing help
4. Local government
5. State government
6. Federal government

Any policy should be judged by the basic standards of "does it promote self reliance? and does it empower individuals?"

Parents should be empowered to choose what school their kids go to. Funding should follow the student, not the school. Workers should be allowed to save at least a portion of their Social Security dollars in a personal account, rather than having the government control the funds.

On social issues, conservatives, believe that faith is the bedrock of society. They believe in the sanctity of life, and the sanctity of marriage.

Conservatives believe that government is inefficient by it's very nature, and so it should do as little as possible. From a conservative perspective, one of the only legitimate roles of the federal government is national defense.

Conservatives claim to be fiscal conservatives yet make the government bigger and create the largest deficits. What they say they are and what they do are two completely different things.

You need to make a distinction between conservatives and liberterians. Libertierians supposedly really do want less government. Conservatives on the other hand want less government helping people and more government telling people how to live their lives according to a conservative interpretation of christianity.

Conservatism is the belief in a free uncontrolled market. It differs from classic American liberalism, which believes the market must have some regulating control to protect individuals.
Both American liberalism and American conservatism have common belief in private ownership and control of wealth as a neccessity for individual freedom and liberty.
