I don't think they did either. But if some did, keep in mind that many were shot down before they could hit their target. Frag to the head would do that.

Their goal was to deliver maximum damage to their enemy and not to get killed them selves before they succeed. If they bonk their head and fail to deliver the bang to the side of the ship, then they failed.
This is why they wore helmets and did every other safety thing that was needed to get their plane to the side of a ship.
