It has little in common with the other countries, it's on the verge of becoming a quasi-theocrasy, doesn't even recognize that all the present EU countries exist (Crete), and moreover, the vast majority of Turkey isn't even in Europe?

I have nothing against Turkey, nor am I even European; but I'm curious what Europeans (or whoever) thinks about this. It just seems like a very odd partnership.

I'm not being a bigot. I'm really not concerned if Turkey would fit in or not. However, IT'S NOT EVEN IN EUROPE. Do you think South Korea and Japan could join too?

Plese stop being racist.

The EU has nothing to do with common traits among people and everything to do with big corporations having access to cheap labor and capital.

When did Europeans get into demonstrations and unto the streets demanding a European Union anyway??? It was the big business seeking less taxes and duties that put the EU in place.

So yeah bring Turkey on.. it is a member of NATO and has more legitimacy than half of those Balkan countries

I tend to think it should be, but should of course be held to the same rules as all other EU members. I'm pretty sure the current Turkish government would not be in compliance. I'm thinking that joining the EU would be a good thing for Turks, although, Islamic extremists might not like Turkey joining the EU, and might start attacking them, to send a message to other Islamic countries not to join forces with the west.

Turkey is a NATO member; it does not make sense for the EU to block its admission to the European Union. Besides, Turkey is a model for an Islamic country - modern, progressive, tolerant. While Turkey may need to improve its human rights record, this cannot be the basis for the EU to stall its entry.

I think that the EU is terrific, and that Turkey should be allowed to join, if it will follow "the rules" of participation, but I am a stupid American, so what do I know!?!?!?

In spite of Turkey's problems, ( as long as Turkey stays true to the secular government of ATTATURK ) , I feel it should be allowed in.

Yes, and you are being a bigot, have nothing against Turks indeed, as an American christian conservative I think it is a great idea to welcome them. lets not alienate them, human rights abuses will hopefully improve with time, they certainly are not perfect but what nation is.
