proportional problem

24/60 = x/5

60x = 24(5)

60x = 120

60x/60 = 120/60

x = 120/60

x = 2

The hill is 2 miles long

5 minutes = 5/60 =1/12 of an hour

so 24*1/12 = 2

the hill was 2 miles long

Nelson traveled for 5 min or (5/60) or (1/12) of and hour. He was moving at 24 miles/hour

Our proportion is

( 1 hour / 24 miles) = ((1/12) hour / x miles)

x = (1/12 hour * 24 miles)

x = 2 miles in 5 minutes

The hill is two miles long!

If he is going 24 miles/hour than he is going 0.4 miles/minute (24 miles per hour divided by 60 minutes per hour). Therefore in 5 minutes he will have traveled 2 miles (0.4 miles per minute times 5 minutes). The hill is 2 miles long. That's a big hill.

2 miles

24MPH / 60 (Seconds) = .4 Miles Per Minute

.4 x 5 (minutes) = 2 Miles

24 miles/ hour = 24 miles/60 minutes

24 mi/60 min = x /5 min , where x is the distance(length) of the hill
24mi x 5 min = 60 min x
120 mi x min = 60 min x
120 mi x min/60 min = x
2 mi = x
x = 2 miles ===> the length of the hill

For simplicity:

24/60 = x/5
24 x 5 = 60x
120 = 60x
120/60 = 60x/60
2 = x
x = 2 miles

hello friend ,

hourly speed is 24 miles then speed in minute is 24/60=0.4

(60 means 60 minutes in a hour) then

the distance he can cover within 5 minute is 0.4X5=2 miles

hills height is 2 miles

ok

24 miles/1 hr = ? miles/ 5 mins [as a proportion]
change mins to hours...
24 miles/1 hr = ? miles/(1/12) hr
there is the proportion you are looking for!
now cross multiply and divide...
24(1/12) /1 = 2 miles
=)

proportions require one constant quantity to relate two other quantities...
in this case, keeping speedconstant we get that the time and distance can be related as:

5/60=x/24 where 'x' is the distance travelled in 5minutes.

solving this we get that Nelson goes 2 miles in 5minutes which i sth eheight of th hill...
