Simple! Just add the sides up. (We are looking for the perimeter of a triangle or in other words the length around it)

1/3 + 1/4 + 5/12 = x

First find a common denominator...which is 12

(4/4)*(1/3) + (3/3)*(1/4) + (1/1)*(5/12)

Combine like terms and distribute into a single fraction

4/12 + 3/12 + 5/12
=(4 + 3 + 5)/12
=12/12
=1

Given a triangle with sides 1/3, 1/4 and 5/12 inches, find its perimeter.

The formula for the perimeter of a triangle = side 1 + side 2 + side 3
P = 1/3 + 1/4 + 5/12

Convert the fraction into similar fractions (fraction with the same denominator)
To do that, find their LCD (Least Common Denominator ) or LCM (Least Common Multiple)
The multiples of the denominator:
3 is 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and soon (just add 3 to the previous number)
4 is 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and soon (just add 4 to the previous number)
12 is 12, 24, 36, 36 and soon (just add 12 to the previous number)
By inspection, we can see that 12 is their LCM

Just divide the LCM by the denominator and mulitply the quotient by the numerator, and then retain the denominator.

LCM / D = Quotient x Numerator = Product/Denominator

1/3 = 12/3 = 4 x 1 = 4/12
1/4 = 12/4 = 3 x 1 = 3/12
5/12 = 12/12 = 1 x 5 = 5/12
P = 4/12 + 3/12 + 5/12 (Just the numerator and retain the denominator)
P = 12/12
P = 1 inch ===> the perimeter of the triangle

Hope you understand!!!

Let me SHOW you HOW to do it so you will understand.

Find the perimeter of a triangle - triangle has 3 sides and perimeter is the distance around. You have to find the distance around your triangle.
P = s1 + s2 + s3, P = perimeter, s = side

If you were a little ant walking around this triangle you would walk 1/3 inches, another 1/4 inches and finally 5/12 inches. How far would you walk?? OK, let add them up and see.

1/3 + 1/4 + 5/12 Do you remember your teacher talking about lowest common denominators? Well, we need to find a NEW denominator (bottom number of the fraction). You can only add (subtract too) fractions that have the same bottom number. Our numbers are all different so our first job is to make them the same.

We have a 3, 4 and 12. If you know your timestables, well this is easy - it you are not so good with tables then this will be a bit harder for you.
3, 4 and 12 - lets do the tables:

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18...
4, 8, 12, 16...
12.................SEE something the same here? LOOK - the 12 is in all three timestables - YES that will be out new number.

1/3 = ?/12.....mutiply the bottom by 4 so multiply the top by 4
1/4 = ?/12.....mutiply the bottom by 3 so multiply the top by 3 5/12 = 5/12...stays the same

1/3 = 4/12 ....(we muliply by 4 because 3 x 4 = 12)
1/4 = 3/12....(we muliply by 3 because 4 x 3 = 12)
5/12 = 5/12..(stays the same)

Lets add now:

1/3 + 1/4 + 5/12 ....(here's our question)

= 4/12 + 3/12 + 5/12 =....(finding a new denominator)

= 12/12 = . (add - note** denominator stays the same, add
.................. numerators
= 1..............(reduced to lowest terms)

The perimeter of the triangle is 1 inch.

As 1/3,1/4 and 5/12 are the sides of the triangle, the perimeter is basically all the sides added up.
1/3+1/4+5/12=1

1/3 is more than 1/4. But 1/2 is more than 1/3.

The perimeter is the sum of the sides. The easiest way would be to convert all 3 measurements to fractions with the lowest common denominator which in this case would be 12. Therefore the 3 sides would be 4/12, 3/12, and 5/12. Now when you add these up you get 12/12. Next you would reduce this fraction to 1. Therefore the answer would be 1 inch.

The perimeter is the total lenght of the sides combined. In your case: 1/3 + 1/4 + 5/12. Total 1 inch.

your numbers has unlike denominators so you want find the same denominators numbers 1/3=4/12 1/4=3/12 5/12=5/12
4/12+3/12+5/12=12/12=1 inch

remember perimeter you add the numbers and area you multiplies the numbers
