The old professor says: Australia is a country based on the international acceptance of governance and decree. Australia is a continent based on its geology...which defines a continent as a large land mass underlain by continental type rocks (primarily alumino-silicates) which are less dense than oceanic basement basalts, and thus "float" on (top of) crustal plates. It also exhibits other characteristics of continental structure such as a shelf, slope, and rise in addition to a stable interior and mobile belts.This is what really takes it out of the "island" category.

Yes,it's both a country and a continent.No,there are no other countries on the continent of Australia.

Yes , it is both but contrary to what has been answered it has 6 states & 2 territories .

The people of New Zealand would be very angry to hear that their country is part of Australia ..it is not !

There are islands just off shore that are part of Australia & a couple of others further away like Lord Howe Is & Norfolk Is that receive assistance from Australia & I believe use our currency & legal processes etc

It's a continent because it is on its own continental shelf, it's a country for obvious reasons
Should be noted that New Zealand isn't on the same shelf as Australia and is not part of the continent
