The punk rock movement as a whole - and not just the Pistols - did rather more damage to self-important prog rock bores than it ever did to disco. Some people will always want a good, snappy tune to dance to and the charts of the time reflect a rather uneasy coexistence between fashionable punk and plain old pop. The album charts though, were a revelation: some of the old guard never recovered, and others took years to recover until nostalgia tours became the in thing amongst us older types.
The irony there is that only recently, you could see bands like the Pistols (sans Sid of course), The Damned, as well as Yes and Deep Purple all doing cash-in tours. Drum solo anyone?

The whole Punk Rock thing came and went and livened up the British music scene for a while - but disco/dance music survived it (unfortunately). The truth is there will always be a need for inane music that people just want to dance to. At least it's evolved slightly over the years.

Actually The Damned did.
They released the first punk single New Rose before the Pistols even got started.
70's disco was the American response to British Punk.

Despite the marketing hype the Pistols are vastly underrated. They were really a good rock band with a punk label. John Lydon is somebody I'd like to have a beer with.

punk music in general did this, not just the sex pistols. but then punk fused with a sort of disco and made new wave, but then there's nothing bad about new wave any way.

Not really , the first punk gig included The Damned + Siouxie and the Banshees so you have to include them also, as to The Clash i felt they sold out too easily as did the Stranglers

Can't say I know what "vomme" is, but notice that nowadays, the classic rock is relegated to its own stations at the far end of the dial, and dance/new-rave music is constantly played on Radio 1.
