Yes, the capital of the United States is Washington D.C., with the D.C. standing for District of Columbia.
In its early stages as a collection of semi-autonomous states, the capital was moved from Philadelphia to Washington DC in order to appease the southern states. The district was created so that no one state could claim ownership of the capital.

It's Washington in the District of Columbia. Because America is not a country as such being a collection of separate autonomous states the capital could not be in any of those states. Therefore another 'state' had to be created to house the capital, hence the 'District of Columbia' that was made for this purpose.
