I don't think it is the choke, It sounds like some thing or device, that governs speed, has gone bad. Sounds like it is pulling back that link, causeing high RPM when started.

I think it is called a stepper motor

Hi

If your car is registered late K reg or later, then it is fuel injected not carb and therefore will not have an auto choke, it will have a coolant sensor.

If your car does have a carb, then it sounds as though either you have an intake air leak or the auto choke is sticking on.

Remove the air cleaner and start the engine. The choke flap in the top of the carb should gradually open as the engine heats up. If not then the choke is sticking on.

Cheers

While the engine is revving high remove the throttle cable @ the throttle shaft. If the RPM does not return to an idle, remove the air intake hose [in front of the throttle plate] Check that the butterfly is all the way closed. If so then replace the TPS.

sounds like the throttle return spring is weak or the cable is sticking due to wear. The automatic choke may not be shutting off.Vauxhalls auto choke used to be adjustable by slackening off the screws at the side of the carb choke assembly and tensioning the internal return spring by rotating the side cover--re-tighten the screws, but you may have a different choke assembly fitted

Is the accelerator cable stuck (ie not releasing so it thinks you are always accelerating?)

Or if its a new car.. the Engine Management system could have gone wrong.

the oil shoots up, you might need new spark plugs.
