It is a pump located on the frame near the driver side door. The one I have is gummed up and will not allow the gas to get to the engine. I need a replacement but am not sure of what this part is officially called. Any help or a clue of what I am talking about?

It's called a fuel pump. Go to your local auto parts store and tell them.

Are you ready? That "pump" under the driver's side on the frame rail IS your fuel filter. Period. The pump is in the tank !, relay is on right fender apron. Believe me, I've got the books in front of me and I looked at my 89 Bronco 2, just to make sure! Oh, R1volti the 4.0 was in the 91-94 Explorers.

Go to www.autozone.com for full fuel system description and photos.
Its the filter if its an 1989. If its a 1988 its the high pressure
pump.

On the 2.3L twin plug engine and the 2.9L and 4.0L engines starting in model year 1989 the electric fuel injection system uses a fuel tank and fuel pump/sender assembly.
