i hear stanford is more than 8000 acres....but since columbia is in the city its probably not a big school in area?

If you check the Columbia website they have a campus map. The main campus is quite small, mainly just one city block centered around a couple of very small lawns and the wide stone steps of the famous library - the students sit there and call it the "urban beach."
