Iron Chloride is correct

The reason is that the oxygen on the ethanoic acid donates a lone pair of electrons to the metal center, in a bond called a coordinate bond.

The complex formed has a purple color.

that is right....but a more routinely performed test is esterification..
in this ethanoic acid is mixed with ethanol( or any alcohol) in presence of dilute sulphuric acid..the resultant solution is poured into a beaker with water( say 100ml not more if ur solution is in a testube) ....u will get sweet smell.

Lancenigo di Villorba (TV), Italy HI, MR. ZALA.... I SENT YOU YET SOME ANSWERS INTERESTING "WET CHEMISTRY's ESSAYs"... Did you read one about BROMOETHANE?! This time, you need to distinguish among SIX CLEAR LIQUIDs, e.g. BROMOETHANE, 1-BUTANOL, CYCLOHEXENE, ETHANOIC ACID, 2-METHYL-2-PROPANOL and WATER. ###################### #### BROMOETHANE ### ###################### This Chemical Stuff is also known as ETHYL BROMIDE. I suggest you these tests : -) appears as a clear liquid ; -) it results NOT able to dissolve in water ; -) you can hydrolizes it in HOT and ALKALINE aqueous solutions, so these liquids reacts against AgNO3's aqueous solutions CH3CH2Br(l) + NaOH(aq) ---> CH3CH2OH(aq) + NaBr(aq) AgNO3(aq) + NaBr(aq) ---> AgBr(s) + NaNO3(aq) giving a Pale Yellowish Matter as AgBr. ###################### ###### 1-BUTANOL ##### ###################### This Chemical Stuff is also known as n-BUTYLIC ALCOHOL. I suggest you these tests : -) appears as a clear liquid ; -) it MAY RESULT able to dissolve in water ; -) it results able to dissolve in H2SO4's solutions ; -) it results ABLE TO REACT AGAINST K2CrO4/H2SO4's solutions 6 CH3(CH2)2CH2OH(l) + 2 K2CrO4(aq) + 4 H2SO4(aq) ---> ---> 6 CH3(CH2)2CHO(aq) + Cr2(SO4)3(aq) + 2 K2SO4(aq) + 4 H2O(aq) so you will obtain a YELLOW-GREENISH COLORATION ; -) it results NOT able to react against LUCAS's Reactive. ###################### #### CYCLO-HEXENE#### ###################### I suggest you these tests : -) appears as a clear liquid ; -) it results NOT able to dissolve in water ; -) it results able to dissolve in CONCENTRATED H2SO4's stuffs ; -) its vapours have a PLASTIK-LIKE SMELL ; -) it results ABLE TO REACT AGAINST VON BAEYER's Reactive 3 C6H12(l) + 2 KMnO4(aq) + 4 H2O(aq) ---> ---> 3 C6H12(OH)2(aq) + 2 MnO2(s) + 2 KOH(aq) so you will obtain an UNCOLORATED LIQUID ; -) it results NOT able to react against K2CrO4/H2SO4's Mixture. ####################### #### ETHANOIC ACID #### ####################### This Chemical Stuff is also known as ACETIC ACID. I suggest you these tests : -) appears as a clear liquid ; -) it results able to dissolve easily in water ; -) its vapours have a SOUR SMELL ; -) it results able to TURN ORANGE-YELLOWISH the Litmus-Paper's Coloration. ####################### # 2-METHYL-2-PROPANOL# ####################### This Chemical Stuff is also known as t-BUTYLIC ALCOHOL. I suggest you these tests : -) appears as a clear liquid ; -) it MAY RESULT able to dissolve in water ; -) it results able to dissolve in H2SO4's solutions ; -) it results NOT able to react agianst K2CrO4/H2SO4's solutions ; -) it results ABLE TO REACT AGAINST LUCAS's Reactive (CH3)3COH(l) + HCl(aq) ---> (CH3)3COH2+(aq) + Cl-(aq) (CH3)3COH2+(aq) + Cl-(aq) ---> (CH3)3CCl(l) + H2O(aq) so you will see a CLOUDY ASPECT. I hope this helps you.
